Education and Training

CAPAM Staff in collaboration with scientists from NOAA and other institutions organize short-courses on Fisheries Stock Assessment and Fisheries Management in the US and Internationally. Below more information on recent courses and stocks for which models were implemented by course participants.

 

RECENT COMPLETED COURSES

  • CAPAM Associated Research Scientist Dr. Juan Valero taught an introductory course on “Technical training on fisheries stock assessment” on June 12, 2019 in Manta, Ecuador.

 

 

 

 

  • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan Valero and Dr. Melissa Haltuch (NOAA) taught a course on Uncertainty and risk analysis in stock assessments using the modeling platform “Stock Synthesis” during March 7-11, 2016 at INIDEP, Mar del Plata, Argentina

 

  • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan Valero taught a course on the stock assessment modeling platform "Stock Synthesis" during September 8-15, 2014 at the CICIMAR, La Paz, Mexico.

 

  • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan ValeroDr. Melissa Haltuch (NOAA),  Dr. Richard Methot (NOAA) and Dr. Billy Ernst (UDEC, Chile) taught a course on the stock assessment modeling platform "Stock Synthesis" during March 3-7, 2014 at the Universidad de Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile. Travel costs were funded by the National Marine Fisheries Service International Science Strategy (NMFS ISS). More information on the course here and here.

 

  • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan ValeroDr. Melissa Haltuch (NOAA),  Dr. Richard Methot (NOAA) and Dr. Billy Ernst (UDEC, Chile) taught a course on the stock assessment modeling platform "Stock Synthesis" during February 17-21, 2014 at the Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata, Argentina. Travel costs were funded by the National Marine Fisheries Service International Science Strategy (NMFS ISS). More information on the course here and here.

 

  • CAPAM PI Dr. Mark Maunder taught the course Integrated Analysis Using Stock Synthesis: appropriate use of multiple data sets on January 27-29, 2014 at the University of Miami.

  • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan Valero taught the course Introduction to Fisheries Stock Assessment on December 9-13, 2013 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla CA, USA. This was the first fisheries stock assessement course taught in the San Diego area since 2007. Course participants included 23 students, researchers and staff from 8 institutions (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Southwest Fisheries Science Center-NOAA, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Pfleger Institute of Environment Research, University of Hawaii, Hubbs Sea World Research Institute, Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, and San Diego State University).   • CAPAM Research Scientist Dr. Juan Valero taught the course "Harvest Strategy Evaluation in fishery resources" in Viña del Mar, Chile, October 7-10, 2013.
